The two-time CHAN champions suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to co-hosts Kenya in their opening game at a packed Kasarani Stadium, where Austin Odhiambo's goal made the difference in an otherwise balanced contest.
The win for Kenya came with a windfall of Ksh1 million for each player following a promise made by President William Ruto on Saturday, 2 August.
Despite the setback, the mood within the Congolese camp remains defiant, with players and staff quick to underline their commitment to turning things around.
“Our goal hasn’t changed. We want to go as far as possible,” striker Tonny Talasi said in an interview with CAF Media “One defeat doesn’t change everything. In fact, it pushes us to work even harder with humility,”
Talasi, who came off the bench against Kenya, admitted the atmosphere and pace of senior continental football have been a big step up from his recent stint with the DR Congo U20 team.
Still, he remains confident in the group’s ability to regroup and respond with a better performance.
“We’ve reviewed what went wrong against Kenya, and we’re determined to bounce back in the next match. There’s a lot of talent in this group and a real desire to succeed together,” he added.
The 20-year-old forward is among the youngest in the squad but says the spirit in camp has been a source of strength. “There’s solidarity and a lot of support. Even those not playing give everything to back up their teammates.”
Looking ahead to the must-win fixture against Zambia, Talasi is ready to give his all if called upon. “Expect a 200 per cent Talasi out there. Every minute on the pitch matters.”
