Morocco will face Senegal in Sunday’s final after a gripping semi-final double-header delivered drama, tension, and contrasting paths to qualification. The hosts secured their spot in Rabat by edging Nigeria 4–2 on penalties following a goalless draw after extra time, relying on composure and defensive resilience to navigate a high-stakes knockout tie.
Earlier in Tangier, Senegal booked their return to the AFCON final with a narrow 1–0 victory over Egypt, ending the Pharaohs’ bid for a record-extending eighth continental title and underlining the Lions of Teranga’s growing stature in African football.
Although the Real Madrid winger did not score during Morocco’s semi-final win over Nigeria, Díaz has extended his advantage as the tournament’s top scorer with five goals in six matches. His consistent performances have highlighted him as the most reliable attacking threat of the competition. He now has the opportunity to further increase his tally in Sunday’s final against Senegal.
Behind Díaz, the race for the Golden Boot remains tight. Victor Osimhen and Mohamed Salah each have four goals, while a group of five players sit on three goals: Nigeria’s Ademola Lookman, Ivory Coast’s Amad Diallo, Algeria captain Riyad Mahrez, Morocco striker Ayoub El Kaabi, and Mali forward Lassine Sinayoko.
Further down the list, a cluster of players have scored two goals each, representing a wide spread of nations still in the tournament or recently eliminated. In total, 63 players have scored exactly one goal, highlighting the competitive balance of AFCON 2025 and the variety of attacking threats on display.
As the tournament enters its decisive phase, Díaz’s combination of composure, timing, and consistency has set him apart from the chasing pack.
