Deja vu - Injuries travel from Ange to Thomas

Last season Tottenham struggled with numerous injuries – and a similar scenario is unfolding again, leaving Thomas Frank facing problems in Norway for the second round of the Champions League

The Champions League second-round match between Bodo/Glimt and Tottenham will be marked by two key factors, both unfavorable for Spurs – the first being injuries, and the second the fact that the game will be played inside the Arctic Circle, making it the northernmost Champions League match ever.

Tottenham manager Thomas Frank has confirmed that Dominic Solanke will miss the Champions League trip to Norway to face Bodo/Glimt. The striker, who hasn’t featured since the clash with Manchester City on August 23, recently underwent a minor ankle operation that rules him out of Tuesday’s tie as well as the upcoming Premier League fixture against Leeds.

"It’s a small procedure, so that will mean he is not ready for today of course and of course Leeds as well,” Frank explained at his pre-match press conference in Norway. "We’ll have more news about a timeframe after the international break but I don't expect it to be long."

Solanke’s absence leaves Spurs stretched in attack, with Randal Kolo Muani also sidelined after missing training on Monday due to a dead leg. The French forward, on loan from PSG, will sit this one out, meaning Richarlison is the only recognised striker available for selection.

Tottenham defeated Bodo/Glimt 5-1 on aggregate just four months ago on their way to the Europa League final, but this time Frank will have fewer options at his disposal.

Mathys Tel, who played in Spurs’ 2-0 win in Norway during that run, is not part of the Champions League squad this season. Captain Cristian Romero will also stay in England as a "precaution" after taking several knocks against Wolves, though Ben Davies is fit again and set to return to the squad after recovering from a knee problem.

Frank, who took charge in the summer after Ange Postecoglou’s departure, praised Bodo/Glimt for their progress. The Norwegians followed up their memorable Europa League semi-final run with qualification for the Champions League group stage for the very first time. Still, the Dane downplayed the relevance of Tottenham’s past success against them.

"How many months is that? Four months ago? With all due respect, I was not the coach. This is a new game. This is a new situation," he noted.

Spurs began their campaign with a narrow 1-0 win over Villarreal in London, while Bodo/Glimt opened with a 2-2 draw away to Slavia Prague.
