Guirassy with two first-half goals and Adeyemi with two assists launched Dortmund to the CWC quarter-finals, though Monterrey were close to a late leveller - 2-1
Sometimes, everything you need for a win is a bit of luck and a couple of inspired players. Last night, Borussia Dortmund checked all these boxes and scheduled a clash against Real Madrid (Saturday, 23.00) in the FIFA Club World Cup quarter-finals, beating Monterrey 2-1.

Niko Kovac's team established dominance on the pitch from the first referee's whistle and took a 2-0 lead after only 24 minutes. Karim Adeyemi was in charge of assists, while Serhou Guirassy netted a quick brace. At that point, BVB seemed unstoppable, led by the Guinean and the German of Nigerian descent.
Still, something apparently happened during the break, as the tables turned once the second half began. Just three minutes into it, the Mexicans reduced the gap over German Berterame, who found Gregor Kobel's bottom left corner with a skilful header.
Monterrey had almost an entire half to equalize and try to make a complete comeback. In the second 45 minutes, Dortmund made only two attempts - both off target - while Sergio Ramos and Co. shot eight times and tested Kobel thrice.
The Swiss custodian and BVB's defence held out, though they had a bit of luck, especially when ex-Real Madrid captain's added-time header narrowly wide of the right post.

Either way, the Bundesliga side survived and can now start preparing for the ultimate challenge that are Xabi Alonso and his men. Unfortunately for all football fans, we won't witness a duel of the Bellingham brothers, as Jobe was booked last night and will miss a clash against Madrid due to suspension.
That match will also be a replay of the 2024 UEFA Champions League final, in which Los Blancos triumphed 2-0 thanks to Dani Carvajal and Vinicius Jr's late goals.
