Less than a month ago, the striker poured his heart out, revealing that he had lost his mother as a toddler, almost too young to remember her
Victor Osimhen and Galatasaray have a special connection. Not the one that concerns goals - and the Nigerian had plenty of them since arriving in Istanbul, 55 in 67 games, to be precise - nor any sort of on-pitch impact.
Their connection is much deeper, on a human and emotional level, and tonight, it was confirmed once again.
Ahead of the beginning of Galatasaray's clash against Liverpool in the Round of 16 of the Champions League in Turkey, the home fans unveiled a tifo honouring Osimhen and his late mother, with a photo of her and the striker in the Turkish side's and Nigeria jerseys, and a caption underneath that said: "We are family and family is everything".
This deeply touched the 27-year-old and moved him to tears, as he recently (about 20 days ago) reflected on losing his mom as a toddler in a confession he wrote for The Players' Tribune.
"My mother died when I was 2 or 3. Too young to remember anything except her holding me," he revealed.
In the same article, he addressed his move to Galatasaray, stating that many people asked him if he was crazy. Still, Osimhen knew what he was doing.
"I think with my heart. I wanted to play for Galatasaray. How can I go from the emotion of Napoli to just any club? Impossible. Boring."
"When the flight landed, there were 3,000 Gala fans waiting for me in the middle of the night. At a private airport. They were tracking my flight! The people welcomed me with open arms. That feeling is worth more than money," the Nigerian wrote.
And he was right. Some things and feelings are worth much more than money - what happened tonight, for instance. There's no doubt Osimhen will remember it for the rest of his life.
