Class act: Ajax & Groningen to play in front of a single fan to honour his last wish

Reading Time: 2min | Tue. 02.12.25. | 14:40

Initially scheduled for yesterday, the game was moved to today due to fans' riots and was supposed to be played behind closed doors, but an exception will be made for a terminally ill Ajax fan

Health is wealth. A healthy man dreams of many things, but a sick one only prays for health. Unfortunately, sometimes the imminent end is inevitable, and in those situations, fulfilling people's last wishes in their final moments means the world to them.

Peter, a long-time Ajax fan, doesn't have much time left, and his ultimate wish is to see another game of his beloved club.

Yesterday, the Amsterdam side was supposed to face Groningen at home, but the game was interrupted after just one minute, as the hardcore Ajax supporters set off a number of fireworks to pay their respect to one of their deceased members.

After a 40-minute break, everything was set for the continuation, but the incident repeated, and the match was definitely abandoned and rescheduled for today (16.30) - but behind closed doors.

"Peter has played football all his life, has also been a referee, and follows Ajax closely. Football is his whole life, so they wanted to let him go to one last match."

"When we arrived at the stadium, we were given excellent guidance by the stewards. We got a great spot behind the goal. But it quickly turned to disappointment. Peter was very disappointed," said Andre from "Wensenambulance Noord-Holland", who accompanied the man to the match via RTL.

Nevertheless, hearing of Peter's case after it went viral on social media, Ajax made a class move and allowed the terminally ill fan to be the game's only attendee, thus fulfilling his last wish.

"We heard from his wife that he is very happy," said the club's spokesperson as per RTL.

In the end, this case proves how little it takes to be humane and compassionate, and show kindness and generosity. At the same time, it confirms that football is much more than just a game.

It's love, it's togetherness, it's hope. It's a force that, for 90 minutes, can entirely take away a terminally ill man's fear of death and thoughts of it, making him feel more alive than ever.
