Chelsea downed again at Stamford Bridge

Reading Time: 3min | Sat. 28.10.23. | 16:31

Brenftord managed a thrid straight win against Chelsea on their ground

It was the 92nd minute of the match between Chelsea and Brentford, but the crowd at Stamford Bridge was already leaving. Unfortunately, it wasn’t a situation in which it was 3-0 at that point, and they wanted to avoid the post-match crowd. It was 0-1 for Brentford, but the West London crowd knew their team wouldn’t be back from this. And they were right, since four minutes later, it was 2-0. After 13 home games in the Premier League, Chelsea remains with only one home win (Luton in August) and in 11th place, with loads of other clubs ready to pass them on the table if they win this weekend.

On the other hand, Brentford coach Thomas Frank remains the London derby master, as this is his 13th game against teams from the capital of England, his seventh win, and he is yet to taste the defeat. Brentford also became the first side in Premier League history to win each of their first three games against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in the competition. Pochettino might be happy with the overall performance since Chelsea dominated the game and had many chances to score first, but the result is what counts in football. Pochettino made three changes to the side that drew 2-2 at home to Arsenal last time out. Axel Disasi returned from injury in place of Malo Gusto, Noni Madueke and Nicolas Jackson also returned to the side in place of Mykhailo Mudryk and Enzo Fernandez, who have both picked up injuries. Robert Sanchez retained his place in goal despite another shaky display against Arsenal, including making the error that handed Declan Rice the Gunners' first goal and sparked their comeback.

It was all Chelsea in the first half. The Blues had two big chances but failed to score in both of them. In the 10th minute, Madueke came inside off the right and from a tight angle, he stroked the bar. And then ten minutes later, Palmer found Cucurella with a great pass, but the Spaniard is no striker, so he only managed to strike the ball straight into Flekken's body. Unlike Cucurella, Raheem Sterling is a forward but still missed a great opportunity when he passed Collins with some nice touches and then blasted over the bar and into orbit.

The punishment came at the beginning of the second half when Brentford first missed a great chance and then scored to stun the Stamford Bridge crowd. It was Mbuemo who started the action and was given enough space to cross from the byline, and Pinnock was there at the back post. Disasi had no idea that the opposition player was there, and that allowed Pinnock to power a header past Sanchez and give Brentford the lead. Chelsea huffed and puffed from that point on but couldn’t get the equalizer. In injury time, Sanchez came over to the penalty area in a last attempt to score the goal but failed and, in the following counter-attack, couldn’t stop Mbuemo from scoring the second and final goal of the game.
