After dropping points in the dying minutes in the previous Ligue 1 round against Angers, Marseille last night brushed aside Auxerre 1-0 on the road thanks to Angel Gomes' winner
Four days ago, Paris Saint-Germain shockingly drew against Lorient on the road, and Olympique Marseille had a chance to catch up with the Saints at the top of the Ligue 1 table. Still, Roberto De Zerbi's men conceded an added-time leveller and shared spoils with Angers.
Yesterday, the Parisians pulled through in the final seconds thanks to Goncalo Ramos' winner, but they can't be too relaxed, as Marseille continued their pursuit with a 1-0 triumph over the penultimate Ligue 1 side, Auxerre.

The decisive moment occurred at the half-hour mark when Michael Murillo crossed the ball into the home team's box, the keeper Donovan Leon deflected it, and the ex-Man United academy player Angel Gomes - who spent 14 years at Old Trafford, but clocked only 320 minutes for the first team - found himself in the right place at the right time to tap the rebound in and break the deadlock.
However, this clash was anything but a walk in the park for L'OM, as Auxerre's 49th-minute leveller was disallowed for Danny Namaso's offside, while the visitors played with a man down since the 65th minute, since Ulisses Garcia was sent off.
At that point, Marseille's goalie Geronimo Rulli stepped up with some vital saves (and was eventually named Man of the Match), keeping his team's head above water. In the end, Auxerre's Sinaly Diomande was shown a second yellow in added time, so the rivals finished the game even in terms of players.
Thanks to this critical triumph, De Zerbi's crew kept the pace with PSG, which have a two-point edge. In the following days, Marseille will face Atalanta in the Champions League on Wednesday and Brest in the Ligue 1 on Saturday, both times at their Stade Velodrome.
