Change at keeper against St. Pauli?

Reading Time: 3min | Sat. 29.11.25. | 13:26

Jonas Urbig could start in Saturday's game instead of Neuer

For the first time since the start of the Champions League season, Bayern Munich lost the game. The Bavarians are playing a perfect season so far and the Arsenal defeat erazed that. Vincent Kompany‘s men were outplayed and apart from an equalizer didn‘t show much in a 3-1 defeat. But the oldest and most experienced player on the pitch was the worst – Manuel Neuer. Bayern‘s keeper was guilty of two out of three Arsenal‘s goals and the third one was the most obvious one, when he rushed out for more than 40 meters and missed completely, allowing Martinelli to calmly put the ball into the empty net. He was hesitant with the first goal, and when he changed his mind, it was too late. So, maybe today he will be on the bench against St. Pauli.

But if you think that Neuer will be benched due to his poor performance, you are in for a surpise. Not only Kompany is happy with Neuer, he has even supported his decision to rush out before the third goal!

“Mistakes? What mistakes? If you describe that as a mistake, I have a different opinion. What can you do as a goalkeeper? Either wait, then there's a one-on-one in your penalty area. Then he runs straight at you. Or you defend the space and try to help your teammate who is playing against a faster player. I'm hearing this for the first time, so I'm a bit surprised! But okay, football is also about opinions" said the Belgian coach.

So, why Neuer should be benched? Well, if that happens at all this week, it will be due to new keeper‘s progress in the club. After coming from Cologne for seven million euros, Jonas Urbig had only three appearances for the Bavarians this year.

"Of course we want Jonas to make progress, Manu wants that too – we're all working together to make sure Jonas can take those steps. But the timing needs to be discussed calmly. And I haven't had the time for that yet. So far, our focus has only been on St. Pauli, and after training we'll discuss everything that makes sense. If we decide to change the goalkeeper, it's always in consultation with Manu. We haven't done that yet. I have to consider what's most important for the team" said Kompany.
