The 2024 edition of CHAN, co-hosted by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania, kicked off on Saturday, 2 August, and will culminate on Saturday, 30 August, with the final and closing ceremony slated for Nairobi, Kenya.
Kenya, making their debut in the continental tournament reserved for home-based players, stunned joint-record champions DR Congo 1-0 in their opening match on Sunday, 3 August, at a packed Kasarani Stadium.
The victory gave the home side a promising start in Group A, boosting their chances of progressing to the quarterfinals, though they still face three more group matches.
In an interview with Citizen Digital, Aduda said he believes the team has what it takes to make it out of the group and even push through to the last four.
“It’s very possible for Kenya to even reach the semi-finals. Football is a game of 90 minutes, and anything can happen. The boys have trained just as hard as all the other teams, giving them an equal chance,” he said.
Aduda also lauded the government's support for the team, highlighting the Ksh1 million bonus pledge per win made before the tournament began. Following the victory over DR Congo, the players received their reward, a move he believes could be a game-changer for local football.
“Never before has such motivation been seen in Kenyan football. The President has shown his commitment to the game, from stadium renovations to motivating the players.
Every player in the local league will now work harder to earn a call-up. This is huge, and I urge other stakeholders to also come up with incentives for our players,” he added.
Looking ahead to Kenya’s next match on Thursday, 7 August, against Angola, Aduda acknowledged the quality of their opponents but remained optimistic about another positive result.
“I watched Angola in their opening match. They are a good side, but Kenya can beat them, especially with the massive home support, including a huge turnout by local fans,” he noted.
The Harambee Stars will face Angola at 7:00 PM at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.
