The regional tournament is scheduled to take place from June 12 to 22, 2025, in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
The last edition of the championship was held in Uganda in 2022, where the Uganda Crested Cranes clinched the title with an emphatic 3-1 victory over Burundi at the FUFA Technical Centre in Njeru.
Sandra Nabweteme starred with a brace, while Fazila Ikwaput added a goal to seal the win and deliver Uganda their first title in the competition.
Yusuf Mossi, CECAFA’s Competitions Director, confirmed that the decision to revive the women’s championship was strategic, coming just weeks ahead of the TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) set for next month.
“The competition will help our representatives, especially Tanzania, as they prepare for WAFCON. It will also benefit other teams getting ready for the 2026 WAFCON qualifiers, which resume in October,” Mossi said.
Four teams have already confirmed their participation in the June tournament: hosts Tanzania, Uganda, Burundi, and South Sudan, with more expected to follow in the coming days.
Following the Women’s Senior Championship, CECAFA will shift its focus to the inaugural CECAFA Beach Soccer Championship, set to be held in Mombasa, Kenya, from July 7 to 12, 2025.
2025 CECAFA Competitions Calendar:
CECAFA Women’s Senior Championship—June 12–22, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania
CECAFA Beach Soccer Championship—July 7–12, Mombasa, Kenya
CAF Women’s Club Champions League CECAFA Qualifiers—September 3–19, Tanzania
Dar Port Kagame Cup—September 13–27, Tanzania
AFCON U-17 CECAFA Qualifiers (2026)—November 15–30, Ethiopia
CAF African Schools Football Championship CECAFA Qualifiers—December 1–5, location to be confirmed
However, the CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup and the CECAFA U-20 Women’s Championship will not be held this year, with organizers citing scheduling constraints and financial considerations.
Tanzania remains the most successful nation in the history of the CECAFA Women’s Senior Championship, having won the title twice. Kenya, Uganda, and Zanzibar have each lifted the trophy once.
