Dortmund will pay around $5million to trigger Rose’s release clause

After months of flirting and speculation, the decision has been made: Marco Rose, one of football’s best young managers will take over at Borussia Dortmund at the end of the season. His current club Borrusia Monchengladbach made an official statement in which they confirmed that the deal has been struck.

“Marco Rose has now decided that he wants to make use of a clause in his contract, which runs until June 2022, and move to Borussia Dortmund in the summer.”

Dortmund will stick with their first team coach Edin Terzic as interim manager until the end of the campaign. The black and yellows were on the lookout for a new boss since they fired Lucian Favre back in December. The Swiss tactician proved to be an underwhelming appointment after just over a year in the job. He won the German Cup in his first season but was undone by a string of poor results in the first months of the 2020/21 season.

Now the club from the legendary Westfalenstadion believe they’ve found the right man to lead their talented squad to glory. Marko Rose, aged 44, has only spent one full season at Monchengladbach, but it was such an impressive one that it made BVB go after him. It wasn’t the first time Dortmund attempted to hire Rose. They had made him an offer while he was still in charge of Salzburg in Austria. Now they did manage to get their man, but only after agreeing to pay his current club five million dollars and thus activate a release clause that was inserted in his contract.

Marco Rose finished his playing career in 2010, having spent his best years playing as a defender of Mainz 05 in Bundesliga, the same club where now-Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp ended his playing and begun his coaching career. Rose was briefly in charge of a lowly club in Leipzig before being appointed by wealthy Austrian club Red Bull Salzburg to work with the club’s young players. His progress was such that he was given an opportunity to manage the club’s senior team and that’s where his career really took off. Two league championships and an Austrian Cup in his two seasons in Salzburg were enough to make him a sought-after tactician in his homeland. Borussia Monchengladbach were transformed by the young and energetic manager who brought in many fresh ideas. He managed to qualify for the Champions League in his first season. His second season with the club from Borussia-Park will be his last, however, with Dortmund already secured as his next destination.

Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke confirmed that the club has indeed reached an agreement with their Bundesliga rivals.

“We are very pleased that Marco Rose has decided to join Borussia Dortmund. He is currently the coach of Borussia Monchengladbach. Both clubs are in the middle of the season so it’s not ideal to talk about details. Out of respect for everyone involved, we will not comment on this subject again until after the end of the season.”

From one Borussia to another. Marco Rose’s career is about to get a new chapter.
