Due to early Champions League exit, Borussia is forced to sell
It was bound to happen, but the surprising Champions League elimination from Atalanta just made things more difficult for Borussia. BVB has a number of transfers to deal with at the end of the season, but the decisions had to be made as soon as possible. Some of them are already made and some will probable be made in March, but some players will probably know their faith in June. Two out of three biggest stars are in that category. Let’s start with the obvious decisions.
After last week’s official announcement that Julian Brandt will leave the club, Borussia also decided this week that Salih Ozcan (28) and Niklas Sule (30) will become free agents in June. The club chose not to renew their contracts based on their performances, injuries, age and wage. The latter was probably the biggest reason as both players (especially Sule coming from Bayern Munich) had huge wages from Dortmund’s perspective but showed little. For example, Sule was the club’s highest earner with 14 million euros per season, while Ozcan had five. Now, these decisions were made by the club’s executives way before Borussia’s surprising early exit in the Champions League which further complicated things. Now we are coming to a real problem.
In the worst case scenario, the total los will be around 27 million euros, which means some players will have to go, and we are talking about some first-team footballers who are important for coach Niko Kovač. Just selling one of them would solve most of the problems: Karim Adeyemi or Serhiou Guirassy. The German international would be ideal solution as his form is not currently great and he usually starts from the bench. But that is also the biggest problem – his vary form brings down the 60 million euros valuation from Dortmund. This sum would not only offset the club's losses, but also provide room for further transfers. Borussia would also like to keep Adeyemi and sell Guirassy (30), but the player didn’t respond to their extension offer. Adeyemi is still hoping for a call from some Premier League club come June. Guirassy is also a candidate for sale as his transfer would also mean Borussia is out of debt and even has some money for future transfers. His agents, brothers, have been exploring the market for months. Possible destinations for his next big contract are AC Milan in Europe and the Qatari-owned clubs. The only problem is his exit clause, which puts his value between 45 and 50 million euros. Not cheap.
But despite expected (and potential) arrivals, Borussia is also keeping some players. Felix Nmecha was rewarded earlier this week for his outstanding performances with Borussia Dortmund, signing a new contract that will keep him at the club until 2030. And another big announcement awaits-Nico Schlotterbeck. The German international has a big decision to make regarding his future. He is wanted by big clubs, from Bayern to Liverpool so he will either be sold in June or extend his contract. His contract with Dortmund should finally begin at the end of March and all options are open. Borussia is offering 14 million euros per year but Nico also wants to see the club’s ambitions as he wants to win trophies. Keeping Nmecha is a good sign.
