The experienced right-back, who also serves as the club’s assistant captain, has been sidelined for close to five months after sustaining an ankle injury to his right leg during the Mozzart Bet Cup Round of 16 clash against Compel SC on May 21 at Moi Stadium, Kisumu.

Mara Sugar triumphed 2-0 in that fixture to advance to the quarter-finals, later stunning Kenya Police FC 9-8 on post-match penalties to secure a semi-final berth before eventually finishing third in the tournament.

Okwenda’s injury, however, ruled him out of the team’s crucial run-in, forcing him to undergo an extensive recovery process that included having his ankle plastered.

“See who’s 𝘽𝘼𝘾𝙆!!!” the club announced enthusiastically on their official pages, confirming the defender’s return to full fitness.

Speaking to Mozzart Sport, Okwenda admitted the injury came at a challenging time, but expressed delight at making a timely comeback ahead of the new campaign.

"It was a setback that occurred at an untimely moment when the team was fighting to stay afloat while also chasing cup glory. However, that is now behind me, and I am happy to be back to fight and help the team achieve a reputable finish in our second season in the FKF Premier League,” he said.

Head coach Edward Manoah will count on Okwenda’s leadership and defensive solidity as the Kilgoris-based Millers look to build momentum and register back-to-back victories when they host Bidco United on Friday, 24 October, at Awendo Green Stadium.

Mara recorded their first win of the 2025/26 campaign following their 2-1 win over Ulinzi Stars a week ago in a midweek FKF-PL match staged at Ulinzi Complex.
