With neither team able to build sustained consistency this season, this clash at St Mary’s shapes up as a potentially open contest between two teams who have struggled defensively but continue to carry attacking threat.

Southampton currently sit 15th on 33 points from 27 matches, while Sheffield United are just behind in 17th with 32 points from 26 games.

With the relegation zone still uncomfortably close, both sides know that points here could be crucial in shaping the next phase of their campaign.

Southampton enter the fixture on a worrying run of form.

The Saints have managed just one win from their last six matches, losing three and drawing two.

Across their last five league games, they have scored three goals and conceded nine, highlighting defensive fragility that has plagued their season.

Their most recent league outing ended in a 2-1 home defeat to Hull City, extending a seven-game winless run in the Championship.

At St Mary’s, results have been mixed, but goals have not been in short supply, with Southampton conceding regularly despite creating chances of their own.

In terms of team news, Southampton will again be without Mads Roerslev, Shea Charles and Samuel Edozie due to injury. Adam Armstrong remains the key attacking outlet, leading the team with 11 league goals and three assists, while Finn Azaz and Leo Scienza are expected to support him in advanced roles.

Ross Stewart is another option after scoring off the bench last weekend.

Sheffield United arrive with slightly better recent results but remain just as inconsistent. The Blades have won three of their last six matches, but have also lost three in that period.

Their last five games have been extremely open, producing an average of over four total goals per match, with Sheffield United scoring 11 and conceding 10.

Their most recent league fixture ended in a 1-0 defeat at Charlton, a match heavily influenced by two first-half red cards.

Away from home, Sheffield United have shown a willingness to attack, but that has often come at the expense of defensive solidity. Chris Wilder’s side will be without Japhet Tanganga and Djibril Soumaré following suspensions, while Jairo Riedewald remains unavailable.

Callum O’Hare is the team’s top scorer with six goals, while Patrick Bamford is expected to lead the line, supported by creative midfielders such as Gustavo Hamer and Andre Brooks.

Head-to-head history strongly favours Southampton. The Saints have won all of the last five competitive meetings, including a 2-1 away victory earlier this season.

These fixtures have also leaned towards goals, with four of the last five producing over 2.5 goals.

Key Pointers;

Each of Southampton’s last three matches has finished with more than 2.5 goals.

Over 2.5 goals has landed in five of Sheffield United’s previous six games.

This season, 67% of Southampton’s fixtures and 58% of Sheffield United’s matches have produced over 2.5 goals.

Four of the last five meetings between these two sides have delivered over 2.5 goals.

Given both teams’ defensive vulnerabilities and their tendency to be involved in open, end-to-end matches, backing a result-based outcome looks risky.

Goals, however, appear far more reliable. With attacking players on both sides capable of exploiting space and recent trends strongly favouring high-scoring games, this fixture sets up well for another entertaining contest.

Prediction: Over 2.5 Goals
