While the two clubs shared very different ambitions at the start of the season, their current trajectories suggest that this clash could play a crucial role in shaping both ends of the Bundesliga table.

Dortmund, seeking to keep pace with the title challengers, will be desperate to avoid a repeat of last season’s embarrassment, while Augsburg will be hoping to end their alarming slide in form and regain stability under Sandro Wagner.

Augsburg’s start to the 2024/25 Bundesliga campaign has been far from inspiring.

Seven points from their opening eight matches represent their lowest return at this stage since the 2021/22 season, and although a modest four-point haul across the last three rounds hints at some improvement, the heavy 6-0 drubbing at home to RB Leipzig last weekend has left morale severely dented.

The result laid bare the team’s defensive frailties - Augsburg have now conceded a league-high 14 home goals this season, an alarming figure for a side that once prided itself on defensive organization.

Home advantage has done little to help Wagner’s men, with just one win from their last eight home Bundesliga fixtures (D1, L6).

Their latest home defeat, a DFB-Pokal exit to second-tier VfL Bochum, compounded the frustration, further exposing the team’s inability to defend against both elite and lower-tier opposition.

With Augsburg now hovering precariously above the relegation zone, the pressure on Wagner continues to mount.

Dortmund, meanwhile, experienced a promising run earlier in the season, stringing together four consecutive Bundesliga wins between late August and September.

However, inconsistency has crept back in, with the team managing just four points from their last three league games (W1, D1, L1).

Their recent 1-0 win over Cologne offered a slight reprieve, though it came courtesy of a late goal, suggesting fatigue and the demands of midweek football may be taking their toll.

The Black and Yellows were also in DFB-Pokal action on Tuesday night, advancing with a hard-fought win over Eintracht Frankfurt.

Despite the packed schedule, Dortmund remain formidable on the road - losing only once in their last eight Bundesliga away matches, with that defeat coming against Bayern Munich.

The team’s traveling form (W5, D2, L1) suggests that they will arrive in Augsburg confident of all three points.

Last season saw Augsburg complete a famous double over Borussia Dortmund - an extremely rare feat given their historical struggles in this fixture.

However, that success seems more like an anomaly than a trend.

Across the last 15 meetings between the two clubs, Dortmund have won eight and drawn four, leaving Augsburg with just three victories overall.

The home win last season stands out as one of Augsburg’s biggest results in recent memory, but repeating that success appears unlikely given their current defensive frailties and lack of attacking punch. Dortmund, for their part, will be motivated to put that embarrassment to bed and reassert their dominance.

Augsburg’s recent form reads: L L L W D L, while in all competitions it extends to L L W D L L, reflecting a team deeply out of rhythm.

They have trailed at half-time in three of their four home league games this season and continue to leak goals - seven of their eight Bundesliga fixtures so far have seen both teams score, with Augsburg often finding themselves playing catch-up.

For Dortmund, the picture is much brighter.

Their Bundesliga record currently stands at W W W D L W, while across all competitions it reads W D L W W W, highlighting both resilience and attacking consistency.

Importantly, Dortmund are one of only four Bundesliga sides to have scored in every league match this season, underlining their offensive threat.

Interestingly, each of the last six Bundesliga games held on a Friday has seen the home team score two or more goals - an omen Augsburg will be hoping works in their favor. However, given their defensive woes and Dortmund’s attacking arsenal, history may not repeat itself this time around.

Augsburg’s injury list continues to complicate Wagner’s selection options.

Captain Jeffrey Gouweleeuw remains sidelined with a knee problem, having already missed six matches.

Defender Keven Schlotterbeck - who played only a few minutes in the midweek cup defeat - may again find himself on the bench against his younger brother Nico, who has re-established himself as a starter for Dortmund following his own injury layoff.

Up front, Alexis Claude-Maurice has led the line but has struggled to find the net, his last goal coming in February.

With goals drying up and confidence waning, Wagner could hand a start to 19-year-old Mert Komur, who has recovered from illness and impressed in training.

For Dortmund, Aaron Anselmino returned to action in midweek, providing Niko Kovac with more defensive depth.

However, midfield anchor Emre Can and winger Julien Duranville are still unavailable through injury, though the latter has resumed training.

Star forward Serhou Guirassy - who began the season in electric form - has endured a dry spell since mid-September and will be eager to rediscover his scoring touch.

Julian Brandt and Jobe Bellingham, both of whom featured against Frankfurt, might start on the bench as Kovac manages squad fatigue.

Augsburg are expected to line up in a 4-2-3-1 setup, focusing on compactness in midfield and attempting to strike on the counter through the flanks.

However, with defensive cohesion lacking and confidence low, maintaining shape against Dortmund’s fluid attack could prove challenging. Wagner’s men will need discipline and aggression in central areas to disrupt Dortmund’s rhythm.

Kovac’s Dortmund, on the other hand, are likely to operate in their familiar 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 system, emphasizing ball progression through the midfield and sharp transitions in attack.

The key will be how well Dortmund can exploit Augsburg’s fullbacks - an area Leipzig ruthlessly targeted in the 6-0 rout. Expect Dortmund’s wingers to attack space behind the defense while fullbacks push high to pin Augsburg deep.
