Even the giants can be challenged, and resilient Hamburg reminded them how (2-2)
Bayern Munich has tripped twice in seven days. After last weekend's shock defeat to Augsburg in Munich, it was Hamburger SV who flexed muscles on Saturday night against the Bundesliga's top team, forcing a 2-2 draw.
Once a giant rival in the late '70s and early '80s, HSV had languished in the lower divisions for years. Before tonight, their last victory over Bayern had been nearly 17 years ago. Last night's draw isn't just a result - it's a statement.
For over a decade and a half, matches between these two sides had been one-sided nightmares for Hamburg: 9-0, 8-0, 6-0, 5-0… tonight, the script was flipped. The underdogs' young team approached the match with a new mentality: no complexes, no fear, all determination. They ran more, fought harder, and showed that sometimes heart can match quality.
HSV became the first team this season to outrun Bayern, and they did it boldly. Luka Vuskovic was the hero - dominant in the air, calm with the ball, dangerous in attack. His goal in the 53rd minute secured the equaliser and marked him as a rising force, a centre-back capable of changing games at the highest level. Vuskovic also came close with a spectacular overhead kick, just missing the net.
Fabio Vieira was equally impressive, probably delivering his best performance since leaving Porto in 2022. His penalty goal and constant threat to Bayern's defence kept the visitors on edge. Late in the match, Vieira even had a chance at an empty net, only for Alfonso Davies to slide in and block the attempt.
Bayern wavered all game - a testament to Polzin's influence. Vincent Kompany's side felt the absence of Luis Diaz, and their early dominance was blunted. Even when Kane hit the target in the 42nd minute, HSV remained resolute. Diaz briefly gave Bayern the lead in the 46th minute, but HSV stayed on their feet, fought relentlessly, and earned a well-deserved draw.
Determination and courage. Hamburger SV reminded Bayern that giants can be challenged, and no lead is safe.
