Kompany’s message: ‘Don’t be arrogant’

Bayern coach still has some issues despite the excellent form of his player
If you are a fan of Bayern Munich, you are enjoying. The team is winning and that could be even an understatement. The team is winning dominantly without giving opponents a chance. The Bavarians are also scoring a lot of goals, playing exciting and attacking football, just what the fans want. In Bundesliga they have only two draws and are yet to be defeated at all. Borussia Dortmund is in second place but with 11 points less already. Even the players are full of confidence. So, does coach Vincent Kompany needs to worry at all? Oh, yes.
Bayern won some games with high margin (Wolfsburg 8:1, Cologne 3:1, Leipzig 5:1, USG 2-0) but the problem is, they started their games very slowly, allowing the opponents to score first. If you add up the first halves of all four matches, Bayern would have a meager goal difference of 3:3. The second half, however, reveals an impressive 15:0.
"Our advantage is that we're very, very fit. So it's no problem to decide the games only after the 60th minute" said captain Joshua Kimmich with a smile.
But Kompany doesn’t share his views. As a coach, he needs to be worried. Maybe not for the game like today, when relegation fighting Augsburg is coming, but he looks further ahead, to the semi-final of the Champions League for example, and sees a problem. For example, Leipzig scored first and it took Bayern 50 minutes to draw, before scoring another four goals.
"You could say it's a problem for the other teams because they always get weaker in the second half. Right? It's the Bundesliga; you can't expect that in the first 45 minutes, when the opponent is so fresh and has a game plan, everything will be so easy, that we'll score two or three goals and it'll all be over. That's simply not possible. Not in the Bundesliga, not in the Champions League. Leipzig players were clearly better than us. I don't want to see that. I don't like unnecessary arrogance. I don't like it when we suddenly do less than usual. Whether we're ten points ahead or five points behind. For me, hard work is simply what matters. It's a sign of respect for the club and for the opponent" said Komany. The Belgian raised his voice in halftime, which is not something he often does.
"If I get angry, it's because I feel we slip up a bit. We survived and wrote a completely different story in the second half. In the other games, it was more of a normal football match. Ideally, we score three or four goals in the first half. But it's also ideal if you finish the game physically strong. Not that you're good in the first half and bad in the second. If that were the case, it might become a bigger issue for us. But that's always been the case for the opponents. Maybe it's a bigger issue for them..." he explained.
