Bayern get a huge boost ahead of Atalanta UCL game

The sudden goalkeepers injury crisis is over just ahead of the big match

After a 6-1 away win in the first leg of the Round of 16, Bayern Munich doesn’t have to worry about the result in Wednesday’s night game at the Allianz Arena. The Bavarians surely won’t be less concentrated, or as their coach Vincent Kompany put it ‘we don’t play friendly games’, but they did have their dilemma’s concerning the team squad. Some key players will surely be rested, but the goalkeeping position has been under rare threat. Until Wednesday morning.

It was already reported elsewhere that Bayern was in the middle of unpreceded goalkeeper crisis and that it was a real possibility that a 16-year old boy would play his first senior game for Munich ever – in the Champions League elimination round. But luckily for everybody, Jonas Urbig will be between the sticks tonight. According to Bild, the decision was made this morning, during a 15-minute training session with his teammates with goalkeeping coach Michael Rechner. Urbig received the final go-ahead as he demonstrated that he is fit and ready for a comeback, giving a thumbs-up with both hands after his last save. The Bayern medical staff also gave him the all-clear, so nothing stands in the way of his return to action.

Manuel Neuer suffered a calf injury during a 4-1 victory over Borussia Monchengladbach, while Urbig suffered from a concussion and completed the necessary tests with good results - but he still experienced some discomfort, particularly upon landing after aerial maneuvers. Luckily it was all OK this morning, and we are sure that all three young keepers were also relieved to hear that, as they certainly didn’t want to make their senior debut under such a pressure. With the Bavarians' U-19 first-choice goalie Leon Klanac also sidelined for a thigh issue, Vincent Kompany was about to start the 16-year-old Leonard Prescott. He will now be on the bench along three of his teammates: Filip Pavic (16), Vincent Manuba (20) and Deniz Ofli (18). Some of them will certainly make their debut at some point during the game, considering that some first team players will be rested, while others are injured (Neuer, Musiala and Davies) or suspended (Kimmich, Olise.
