Charles De Ketelaere has finally scored in Italy - but he still has a long way to go
It was a fun weekend for every football fan in Italy not in love with Milan - because they all got to tease the Rossoneri in the wake of Serie A's biggest turnaround: Charles De Ketelaere can score goals, after all!
The 22-year-old Belgian spent the last season without scoring a goal for Milan. The disappointed club directors sent him on loan to Atalanta to get rid of him. And what does the young forward do? Of course, he scores in his very first game for La Dea.
CDK dazzled in his debut in Atalanta's shirt by scoring a goal and coming close to scoring two more, while in the red and black of Milan, he had never managed to perform even remotely compared to what he was delivering regularly while he was still at Club Brugge in his homeland.
Benvenuto, Charles #DeKetelaere 😍

On Saturday night, many Milan fans were disturbed by a question as obvious as it is difficult to answer: why has Charles De Ketelaere done more in 45 minutes at Atalanta than in an entire year at Milan? The Belgian left-footer played 40 matches for a total of 1480 minutes in Milan, managing to produce only one assist. Considering the significant investment money Milan paid for him, he surely qualifies as a flop. But Atalanta boss Gian Piero Gasperini still saw something in the boy - and he believed paying $2.2 for a season-long loan was a bargain.
Against Sassuolo, Gasperini initially put De Ketelaere on the bench. It wasn't surprising because Atalanta's style of play isn't immediately easy to adapt to, and the coach has players who already know it by heart. However, at 0-0, De Ketelaere's Bergamo experience officially began at the start of the second half. And it began splendidly: the Belgian was dangerous with a header in his first action - the ball went over the crossbar. Paired up with the other new acquisition, Gianluca Scamacca, he hit the crossbar with his sweet left foot. He was edging closer to his maiden strike in the Serie A. With seven minutes to go, though, the moment Stefano Pioli had been waiting for in vain for a year arrived: from an excellent Matteo Ruggeri cross, De Ketelaere directed it into the net. How much a performance on the field can be influenced by pressure, environment, or the coach is complex to determine precisely, but the difference is clear to everyone, even those Milan fans who have yet to find an answer to that obvious question.
It's like a burden has been lifted off the youngster's shoulders. After the game, he told Corriere Della Sera he was determined to make the most of this opportunity.
"I've waited a long time for sensations like these, I wanted to score, and I'm happy it helped us win the game. I talked to coach Gasperini about my way of playing a lot. I tried to do what he wants. I like the style of football he wants us to play - it's one of the reasons I joined Atalanta. This is a good team, and I want to do well here."
De Ketelaere at Milan: 40 appearances, 1480 minutes, 0 goals. De Ketelaere at Atalanta: debut, 45 minutes, 1 goal. Hilarious - unless you support Milan.
Some people on Twitter joked that the colour of Atalanta's shirt inspired the Belgian international because it resembles that of Club Brugge. But joking aside, he is still a young player who is allowed to have a bad game, a poor month or even a disappointing season. He is still a talented player who has a lot of ability. It's now up to him, his coaches and teammates to make it show.
One goal isn't going to change his whole career, but from a psychological standpoint, the goal against Sassuolo is one of the most important he'll ever score. The journey is still ahead of Charles to score goals with consistency and prove his doubters wrong.
