Another Cameroon drama regarding head coach

Marc Brys allegedly resigned, but the coach is denying it

By registered letter dated July 21, 2025, Mr. Marc Brys notified the Cameroonian Football Federation of his resignation letter addressed to the Minister of Sports and Physical Education, with immediate effect, from his position as Head Coach of the Men’s National Football Team—a position he held under a contract signed in April 2024 with the State of Cameroon, then represented by the Minister of Sports and Physical Education”. This is what the Cameroonian Football Federation officially announced on July 23rd. And many were not surprised when they read this. Since his (surprise) promotion, Marc Brys was under big pressure, not only because he became coach of the one of the Africa’s giants, but because he didn’t have the approval from the CFF president Samuel Eto’o, who sabotaged him, since he couldn’t sabotage the man with whom he is in ‘war’ - Ministry of Sport Narcisse Mouelle Kombi. So, when Brys decided to suddenly resign, nobody was surprised. But he is the catch – he didn’t resign.

It has to be said that since Eto’o was appointed Cameroonian football boss, the stories around the Indomitable Lions were usually for the wrong reasons and little about football. And this latest mix-up is just the continuation of that trend, but (for now) without Eto’s input. Few days after Brys’ resignation, it was announced that the coach actually didn’t do such thing. According to ESPN, Marc Brys has denied he has quit as coach of Cameroon, as the Belgian said his email was likely hacked and his alleged resignation letter did not come from him! Cameroon's sports ministry (who supports him) was in hurry to confirm that Brys remained in his role. FECAFOOT (presented by Eto’o) has not responded to the coach's denial.

A letter dated July 21, supposedly from Brys to the sports ministry and FECAFOOT, said he had made the decision to terminate his contract "due to the non-payment of my remuneration and that of my staff for more than 60 days". All this is happening just months from big events for Cameroon: 2026 World Cup qualifiers and the final phase of the Africa Cup of Nations, scheduled to take place in Morocco starting December 21, 2025. Cameroon have been drawn in a group with defending champions Ivory Coast, Gabon and Mozambique at the Dec. 21-Jan. 18 finals for the AFCON. They are currently second in their qualifying pool for next year's World Cup a point behind Cape Verde with four rounds remaining. Only the top team automatically earns their place at the finals, with Cameroon set for a crunch tie away against Cape Verde in September.
