Another Borussia, another goal fest and a Bayern victory

After beating the one from Dortmund in the previous round, this time the victim was Borussia from Monchengladbach, with a 4–1 win

Tradition says: Bayern don’t lose when they play on Fridays. In the previous 15 matches they played on the fifth day of the week, they remained unbeaten. They’ve won the last seven. And when something becomes a trend, it’s worth following.

A new Friday – new joy for the Bavarians. Borussia Monchengladbach arrived at the Allianz Arena, but they didn’t stand much of a chance against Kompany’s machine. The visitors held on for just over half an hour, but once Luis Diaz broke the wall in front of the goal, everything was decided – 4–1.

And that was with Vincent Kompany sending out a lineup with more than half the team changed compared to the win over Dortmund in the previous round. Injured Harry Kane was missing, but so were Urbig, Stanisic, Tah, Pavlović, Olise and Gnabry, who all started on the bench.

But what can you say when the players who took the field instead were Neuer, Kim, Bischof, Goretzka, Karl and Musiala? Who exactly are the starters and who are the reserves?

The coach’s assessment was that Bayern were still far too strong for Gladbach with this lineup, especially when playing in Munich. And when playing on a Friday. The Belgian was right. By halftime, they were already two goals ahead.

Luis Diaz opened the scoring in the 33rd minute after a fantastic lobbed pass from Goretzka. Then, right before the break, Laimer added his name to the scoresheet. A counterattack from midfield saw Bayern’s players casually stroll to the edge of the opponent’s box before calmly finishing the move.

When you’re two goals down at halftime against a grinding machine like Bayern, it’s hard to choose the right strategy for the second half: sit back and try to concede as little as possible, or go all-out in attack and risk complete disaster.

Gladbach tried something in between. And ended up conceding four. Musiala scored his first goal of the season from the penalty spot in the 57th minute, while Jackson put the finishing touch in the 79th.

The consolation goal for the weakened guests, who had been playing with ten men since Reitz’s red card in the 55th minute, was scored by Moya.
