Akumu's Covid-19 stricken Chiefs denied request to postpone games

Kaizer Chiefs home to Kenyan international Anthony Akumu will have to honour fixtures for the remainder of the year despite being ravaged by Covid-19 after Premier Soccer League (PSL) declined their request to postpone matches.

Amakhosi wrote to the league governing body on Thursday 2 December requesting the postponement of all their matches for the month of December after 31 players and staff tested positive for Covid-19.

The PSL on Monday 20 December responded to the letter denying Chiefs the request to have the rest of their games in the year postponed. 

The league’s Executive Committee revealed that they handed Chiefs an opportunity to provide information in support of their request and to justify the decision to have their games postponed.

“Having exhaustively considered all aspects of the matter, and the information provided, the Executive Committee today resolved that Kaizer Chiefs has not established a basis to reverse the decision of the Football Department. The decision of the Football Department stands and the request to postpone Kaizer Chief's matches for the month of December 2021 has been declined,” read part of the PSL statement. 

The PSL revealed that it will hold a press conference on Wednesday 5th January.

Chiefs have however continued to honour fixtures and on Sunday 19 December lost to Royal AM after an impressive run that took them to top four.
