Akumu’s Covid-19 stricken Kaizer Chiefs request to play in 2022

Kazier Chiefs, home to Kenyan international Anthony Akumu have made a request to the Premier Soccer League (PSL) to have their December games cancelled after an outbreak of Covid-19 in the squad.

According to the club at least 31 players and staff have tested positive for Covid-19 forcing them to temporarily close their Village until next week.

The club has written a formal appeal to the league governing body to postpone their December matches to contain the spread of the virus that has left them with a depleted squad. 

“The Club has written to the Premier Soccer League to request for a postponement of the five upcoming games in December against Cape Town City (4 December), Golden Arrows (8 December), Sekhukhune FC (12 December), Royal AM (19 December) and Maritzburg United (22 December) to avoid risk of infection and further spread of the virus and allow those affected to recover and complete their quarantine period before they can play against other teams,”

“We view this as a case of force majeure as what the Club is experiencing as a consequence of COVID and the protocols it is obliged to implement, is totally beyond the control of the Club,” read a statement from Chiefs.

Amakhosi admitted that they do not meet a quorum for a team and asked the league to treat their matter with seriousness as a number of people are needed to honour a fixture.

Chiefs noted that the team will be closely monitored by our medical team with the league yet to respond to their request.
