Raul De Tomas signed a five year deal with Rayo Vallecano

Raul de Tomas is in the spotlight again. Even when he's not playing. He didn't spend a single minute on the field this season, he won't be there until the end of the calendar year either, but he deserved high places in the Spanish media, because he completed his transfer to Rayo Vallecano on Tuesday morning.

The proven goalscorer left Espanyol and signed for the club from Madrid on a quite long contract - five years, just out of a desire to return to the club where he played his best football. Even if it meant that he would have no chance to fight for a place in the Spanish squad at the World Cup in Qatar.

Given that the work was completed beyond the transfer window, Raul De Thomas will be available to coach Andoni Iraola only for the first match in 2023, at the beginning of January against Betis. Until then, he will only train with his new/old teammates, in an environment that knows him well, because he was the best individual of the team when Rayo fought their way to La Liga in 2018 (24 goals in 38 games). The transfer price is 8 million euros fixed, with another 3 million in the form of various bonuses, making De Tomas the most expensive acquisition in the history of Rayo Vallecano, surpassing the previous record of Alvaro Garcia, brought from Cadiz four years ago for 5 million euros.

The way Raul de Tomas made his transfer to Rayo is almost like a movie script. He wanted to return at all costs and in the end he battled through for his transfer. Literally. Last week, while the final negotiations were being conducted, his agent Ivan Garcia broke the nose of the president of Rayo Vallecano, Raul Martin Presa!?

"He headbutted me completely unexpectedly. It was the move of a criminal, a cowardly act. If he had at least warned me, then let's fight like men", said Martin Presa a few days ago, when the details of the contract were not finalized. In the meantime, the disagreements have been resolved, and the former Real Madrid player, with stopovers in Valladolid, Benfica and Espanyol, has finally arrived where he is loved. A total of 45 goals in two and a half seasons in his first term guarantees efficiency when he becomes eligible to play...
