Talanta Stadium is a multi-billion, flagship project by the Kenyan government to construct a brand new, ultramodern sporting facility in the country that is set to improve the sporting ecosystem and, in the short term, be used as the main venue for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The construction comes after Kenya, alongside neighbours Uganda and Tanzania, won the bid to host the 2027 AFCON in a joint bid dubbed PAMOJA.

The joint bid also included hosting the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), which was held in August 2025.

While the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani and the Nyayo National Stadium were adequate for Kenya to host CHAN, AFCON necessitated an additional, bigger facility, hence the construction of Talanta.

The groundbreaking ceremony was presided over by President William Ruto back in March 2024, and while construction was expected to be complete in December 2025 and later in March 2026, unforeseen circumstances have delayed its completion.

Nevertheless, one of the most distinct features of the stadium, the VVIP skyboxes are almost complete, at least according to photos shared online by the Principal Secretary (PS) for the State Department for Sports, Elijah Mwangi.

A skybox is a private suite, located strategically high up in the stadium with a breathtaking panoramic view.

The amenities are specially designed to provide unparalleled comfort, including a climate-controlled environment, TVs, a private bar, drinks, snacks and dedicated personnel to attend to the guests.

For modern stadia, skyboxes are indispensable features that provide luxury, comfort and privacy. They are a key attraction for top corporate guests, HNWI and other VIPs, local and international.

From the skyboxes, executives can engage in business discussions while still watching football, making it a top attraction for sponsors.

From the photos, the rooms are complete with only fittings and furnishing remaining. Executive couches, which will be used in the skyboxes, are already in place, overlooking the stadium just as is intended.

According to the plan, Talanta Stadium is set to have a whopping 52 skyboxes - the most of any of the stadia intended to host the 2027 AFCON.

With the availability of these high-end amenities in the facility, Talanta and Kenya at large are positioning themselves as a leading contender of hosting the tournament’s final.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) had also recommended the installation of skyboxes at Kasarani, a matter that has been objected by Kenya owing to the fact that the installation of such amenities would call for structural alteration of the facility.

The matter is still under discussion with the technical teams at Sports Kenya, and CAF still in discussions on how to navigate the matter.

Apart from the skyboxes, the other standout features of Talanta are the media facade lighting the outer walls, akin to that of Allianz Arena, home to German club Bayern Munich.

A media facade is a lighting technology that integrates either LED or other advanced technologies on the outer surface of buildings in order to create a large-scale, visually engaging display.

The technology is used for the beautification of walls and stadiums, and can also be used as additional high-end spaces for advertisement.

Currently, only the newly built Hoima Stadium in Uganda, which will also be used during AFCON, has that technology fitted in the region.

Additionally, Talanta is the only stadium in Africa and only the fifth in the world that has employed a hydraulic tension cable roofing system that uses tension instead of compression to stabilise the roof.

In this technology, a combination of powerful hydraulic jacks and a network of high-strength cable steels are fitted as the roof is lifted, with the roofing membrane eventually sitting on the tension cable net system.

Apart from the skyboxes, PS Mwangi also revealed that construction of the auxiliary training facilities at Talanta are ongoing and are expected to be complete before AFCON begins.

The three annexes - the most by any stadium in the region- will be used as additional training grounds for teams participating in the continental tourney.

Upon completion, Talanta is expected to cost a total of USD344.5 million (approximately Ksh44.5 billion).
