The Hamburg derby will get full attention from the German police

The police officers from city of Hamburg are prepared. There will be 1000 of them on the streets. By 20h, police helicopters will be up and will monitor the area. On ground, there will be a unit on horses, while armored vehicles will be standing by with water cannons. Around 300 members of the special forces from the BFE (Evidence Collection and Arrest Unit) will be prepared. According to Bild, the Hamburg officers are receiving support exclusively from the so-called Northern Alliance (Bremen, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, and Schleswig-Holstein). What is it all about? Well, it’s not war, it’s not military exercise, it’s ‘Hamburg derby’.

For the seventh time, the match between Hamburger SV and St. Pauli will be played on Friday night (22:30). Both set of fans are excited to finally meet each other in Bundesliga, as HSV finally came back to the strongest Germany competition in 2025. But police is not happy. There will be trouble and there will be points where both set of fans will meet so they will be particularly vary of those potential dangerous situations. As for the teams, they will be concentrated on the result, as both clubs are in a relegation battle. HSV is only four points above the relegation-playoff spot, while St. Pauli is at the bottom of the table. The last time two rivals met under these difficult circumstances was in 2001!

In August, when Hamburg was the host, St. Pauli won 2-0. A particular scene back then is something that the visiting coach wants to use as motivation for his players. Polzin and his coaching staff will show the players footage of the loss from late August in the locker room during the week. And what is on the photo? St. Pauli players posing at the Hamburg pitch in front of the away fans, accompanied by chants like "We are number one in the city”. HSV wants to make sure it doesn’t happen again.
