Day 2 starts on Tuesday and extends all the way to Wednesday morning

After a successful first day in office that saw Betty Chelangat and Nancy Cherop pluck the country’s first gold and bronze medals respectively in the 3000m women’s race at the ongoing World Athletics U20 Championships, Kenya will be seeking to use the good start heading into day 2 in Cali, Colombia.

Although there will be no medal up for grabs for Kenya on the second day, athletes taking part in the 800m women race will be seeking to make it to their final when they line up in their respective heats. Here is the country’s itinerary on Day 2.

Damaris Mutunga, who will line up in Heat 2 (PB 53.71), and Sylvia Chelangat, who will be in Heat 4 (PB 52.23) will be seeking to be anywhere among the top four in their races or to have the top four fastest times as they seek to make it to the 400m semifinals.

Should they make it to the final, the two will face a huge task when they come up against the current finest one lap runners in Dejanea Oakley (Jamaica) and Mekenze Kelley (USA).

Oakley – who ran in the mixed 4x400m heats in Nairobi last year – has registered a 51.81 personal best this season, while her fellow 18-year-old Kelley has improved from 53.65 to 51.98 this summer, and a fierce battle is predicted for the closely-matched pair.
