Then, Kenya’s Wanyonyi became the second-fastest man of all time, as he ran 1:41.11 to win ahead of Arop 1:41.72 and Tual 1:42.30.
The 50th edition of the Athletissima will provide a platform for Wanyonyi to extend his dominance over the Canadian Arop, following his two impressive wins in Monaco and London respectively.
At the former, Wanyonyi produced his season-best run by clocking a meet-record of 1:41.44, a race that saw Arop finish fifth in 1:42.73.
In London, the tussle was a bit closer, with the lead changing hands twice on the final lap, before Wanyonyi produced his trademark finish to win in a time of 1:42.00.
World champion Arop, with his brave effort, was second in 1:42.22.
The latest installment sets up for another cracker, with the added prospect of the duo going all out for the Diamond League final and World Championship gold medal in Tokyo.
As per a recent announcement from Diamond League, the 21-year-old Kenyan has already confirmed his place in the Diamond League Final in Zurich, which takes place on 27-28 August.
Then, Wanyonyi will be hoping to defend his title and extend an extraordinary string of dominance in the Diamond League circuit, which has only seen him lose just four of his 16 races since 2022.
Others to have advanced to the finals notably include: Dutch 400m hurdles star Femke Bol, two-time Olympic champion Valarie Allman and Sweden’s discus star Daniel Ståhl.
