The 20-year-old not only won the Monaco Diamond League but also produced a world lead of 1:41.41 and expressed his desire to be the man to break the 13-year-old record set by Rudisha

Since the 800m world record was set by Kenyan legend David Rudisha in the 2012 London Olympic Games, no human has been able to run faster than the 1:40.91 mark.

Even more surprising is that no athlete has been able to dip under the 1:41 mark with all of Rudisha's challengers in that record-breaking race setting a Personal Best.

However, Rudisha’s compatriot Emmanuel Wanyonyi in recent times has come close to breaking the record, but again has not just been able to shatter the long-standing record.

The 20-year-old not only won the Monaco Diamond League but also produced a world lead of 1:41.41 and expressed his desire to be the man to break the 13-year-old record set by Rudisha.

“Sometimes I think about the world record. I think I can break it in the future. Focus is now on the preparations for the next races before the World Championships,” said Wanyonyi after the race.

Wanyonyi disclosed his winning strategy in the Monaco race, but was keen enough to notice the growing competitive nature of the 800m, which requires him to be at his best.

“I was very well prepared for that race, and I had done my homework well to give my best and have a good time.

This race, however, has become very competitive, and I need to do better and push harder in training to polish areas where I feel I need to do better,” he told Telocomasia.net.

Wanyonyi, who has already qualified for the Diamond League finals set for Wednesday, 27 and Thursday, 28 August, has now set his eyes on the World Championships in Tokyo, which will be held from Saturday, 13 to Sunday, 21 September.

“My full focus is on preparing for the World Championships, and this means I have to pay attention to every detail both in training and the races I compete in,” he concluded.
