During the Thanksgiving service held on Sunday, 4 May, at a packed Adventist Church in Trelawny Parish, an emotional Bolt addressed the congregation, turning to his grieving mother, Jennifer, with a heartfelt promise.
“I just want to say to my mommy, ‘I’m here for you fully.’ I’m now your husband and your child. You’re going to see me more than ever now,” Bolt said.
During the service, Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness gave Bolt a special honour by calling him a national hero and national asset.
“Usain is a global icon, a national hero, a national asset. No one has to think about that," the Prime Minister said.
Holness also comforted Bolt and his family, saying the whole nation was standing with them in mourning.
“We all feel your pain, and we are praying for you,” he said.
Usain has always said that his parents helped shape him into the person he is today.
He shared that it was his father who helped guide him from football to athletics, a decision that made him the fastest man in the world.
“Whatever I am today, it’s because of my parents. It all started at home,” he said.
He went on to thank all the people who stood with him and the family during the difficult time, reassuring his mother of his support.
“Thanks, everybody, for the prayers and the love. I feel it. Pops, don’t worry. I have Mommy now,” he concluded.
