A team of 23 athletes will be flying Uasin Gishu's flag high at this week's National Paralympic Track and Field Trials at the newly-renamed Kiprugut Chumo Stadium.

The games began in Kericho County on Wednesday through to Saturday and will be used to select the Kenyan team for the East African Games in Rwanda next month.

The Uasin Gishu team has sharpened its mettle and will be hoping to claim all available accolades at the national event.

Speaking as she joined the team during a homestretch training session at Kipchoge Stadium, Chief Officer for Sports, Nahum Jelagat, said the County Government is working to make the County a multi-sports powerhouse.

Among the notable names for the trials include Wesley Sang who will compete in the 1,500m race. Sang who is under the tutelage of Coach Ruth Ndalat will be using these trials to prepare for the 2024 Paralympic Games. He qualified for the Paralympics months by virtue of finishing fourth to earn an automatic slot in the Paris Games.

Ndalut will be banking on the experience of his fellow players like Brian Esogon (long jump, 400m and 100m), Timothy Yatoich (javelin), Theophilus Rono (javelin, shot put), Aron Kipkoech (javelin, shot put), Winrose Nafula (discus, shot put), Beatrice Cherop (shot put, discus) and Kelvin Wamalwa (javelin, shot put).

These are athletes we hope to qualify for the Paralympics. We want to have as many athletes qualify when we compete at international events including the World Athletics Grand Prix qualifiers set for February in India, the World Para Athletics in Tunisia in March, and the World Para Athletics Championships in Japan in May,” explained Ndalut.

Director of Sports Development, Henry Mukolwe, said there is a deliberate plan that is being rolled out through the County Sports Council to ensure every sport is nurtured in the County.
