This year’s meet is packed with firsts. Not only is it the first time fans will pay to attend, but it is also the first time the event will be staged at the 10,000-seater Ulinzi Sports Complex, a military-owned facility in Nairobi.

Regular tickets have been priced at Ksh200, with the VIP tickets being sold for Ksh2,000 for the one-day event.

Ideally, given the large number of Kenyan athletics fans as compared to the limited seating capacity and growing popularity of the event, charging an entry fee will be one of the practical means to manage crowd size.

Nyayo Stadium, which has traditionally hosted the Kip Keino Classic alongside Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, is undergoing major upgrades in preparation for the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), scheduled for August.

Heavy rains have further delayed the installation of a new tartan track, making it impossible for the stadium to be ready in time.

Speaking during the launch on Tuesday, 20 May, Athletics Kenya (AK) Youth and Development Director, Barnaba Korir, who doubles up as the race director, encouraged fans to turn up in large numbers to support Kenyan athletes.

“I urge Kenyans to show up in large numbers to support and cheer on our athletes,” he said.

In total, 189 local and international athletes are expected at the event, with 59 Kenyan athletes featuring.

Some of the biggest names anticipated include local favourites Ferdinand Omanyala and Otieno Mark, who will tussle with Olympic gold medalist Jerome Blake, World U20 Champion Bayada Walaza and World Indoor 60m silver medalist Laclan Kennedy in the men’s 100m.

Other athletes expected at the meet include Switzerland’s Mujinga Kambundji, who will be competing in Kenya for the first time and is expected to light up the 200m race, as well as Botswana's fastest woman, Tsaone Sebele. Local favourites Wiseman Were and Mary Moraa will also be in action.

This year’s edition will also feature kids’ athletics as part of the World Athletics programme, which is designed to inspire the next generation of athletes.

The 2025 edition remains under the title sponsorship of Absa Bank, which has committed Ksh60 million; Ksh40 million in cash and Ksh20 million in kind to the event for the sixth consecutive year.

The Ministry of Sports has also thrown its weight behind the meet, allocating Ksh300 million towards its successful execution.
