The event, which was initially slated for the Nyayo National Stadium, will be held in the 10,000-seater capacity military facility. It will be the first time the event is held at the Ulinzi Complex.
Speaking during the official launch of the event held at the facility on Tuesday, 20 May, Race Director Barnaba Korir explained the reason behind the venue change.
“This year, we’ve opted to host the event at Ulinzi Sports Complex due to the ongoing renovations at Nyayo National Stadium,” he said.
Nyayo, which has traditionally hosted the Kip Keino Classic alongside Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, is undergoing major upgrades in preparation for the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), scheduled for August.
Heavy rains have further delayed the installation of a new tartan track, making it impossible for the stadium to be ready in time.
Despite the smaller capacity at Ulinzi, organisers remain optimistic about the event's success.
The organisers are also weighing in on the possibilities of charging entry fees.
Ideally, given the large number of Kenyan athletics fans as compared to the smaller facility, charging an entry fee will be one of the logical means to manage crowd size.
Korir, however, emphasised that any monies collected will help fund athlete development.
“Regarding entry, we’re still weighing options between free access and charging a modest fee. Any revenue collected would go a long way in supporting the needs of our athletes, especially the younger ones who need our help to grow and excel in the sport,” he said.
The Athletics Kenya (AK) Youth and Development Director, Barnaba Korir, further encouraged fans to turn out in large numbers to support Kenyan athletes.
“I urge Kenyans to show up in large numbers to support and cheer on our athletes,” he said.
A total of 253 elite athletes and 89 Kenyan athletes will participate. Star athletes already confirmed for the event include: Africa’s fastest man, Ferdinand Omanyala, Swiss sprinter Mujinga Kambunji, Olympic hammer throw champion Camryn Rogers, and reigning men’s javelin bronze medalist Anderson Peters, among others.
