The 32-year-old will line up in the women's 100m event

Swiss sprinter Mujinga Kambundji has been confirmed as one of the participants at this year’s Kip Keino Classic scheduled for 31 May at the Nyayo National Stadium.

Meet Director Barnaba Korir, speaking to Daily Nation, said the 32-year-old had already signed up for the event, making it the first time she will be competing on Kenyan soil.

Kambundji, a World Championships bronze medalist in the 100m, earlier this year added to her glittering resume when she won 60m gold at the World Indoor Championships in Nanjing, China.

The win, which she took ahead of Zaynab Dosso and Patrizia Van Der Weken, was her second at the championships, following her other gold medal three years ago in Belgrade.

Her last race came in the opening leg of this year’s Diamond League season in Xiamen, where she finished last in the 200m, timing 23.51.

The three-time European Championships medalist had been expected to run in the 200m in Shanghai last weekend, only to pull out with illness.

The Swiss record holder for the 100m and 200m will compete in the women’s 100m race in Nairobi, where she will come up against a series of challengers including: Maia McCoy of Liberia, Rani Rocious of Belgium, Botswana’s Tsanone Sebele and Jamaica’s Alana Reid.

Korir mentioned that four more slots still exist in that race, with two set aside for Kenyan athletes.

Mujinga’s personal best in the 100m is 10.89, a time she set in Zurich in 2022.

Also in the sprints, Africa’s fastest man Ferdinand Omanyala is expected to run again on home soil, making it the fifth time he will be gracing the one-day event.

Olympic hammer throw champion Camryn Rogers and reigning men’s javelin bronze medalist Anderson Peters were earlier last month also announced to feature in the showpiece.
