This incident marks one of the most turbulent moments of her career, with Richardson pledging to confront the situation “head-on.”
World 100m champion Sha’Carri Richardson has broken her silence following her arrest on a domestic violence charge involving fellow sprinter and boyfriend Christian Coleman.
In a video posted to Instagram on Monday night, Richardson admitted she had put herself in a “compromised situation” and was focusing on “self-reflection,” vowing not to run away from the consequences.
The 24-year-old followed up with a written statement on Tuesday morning, publicly apologizing to Coleman. “I love him, and to him I cannot apologize enough,” she wrote in all caps, adding that her apology “should be just as loud” as her “actions.”
She ended the message with: “To Christian, I love you, and I am so sorry.”
Richardson was arrested on Sunday, 27 July, at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport on a fourth-degree domestic violence offense. According to the police report, surveillance footage appeared to show her grabbing Coleman’s backpack, blocking his path, shoving him into a wall, and possibly throwing an item at him, believed by TSA staff to be headphones.
Coleman declined to take part in the investigation and did not identify himself as a victim. The arrest occurred just days before Richardson competed in the 100 meters at the U.S. championships in Eugene, Oregon. She spent over 18 hours in custody at the South Correctional Entity in Des Moines, Washington.
In her statement, Richardson described Coleman as a caring man. “He came into my life and gave me more than a relationship but a greater understanding of unconditional love from what I’ve experienced in my past,” Richardson said.
The American sprinter, who claimed the 100m world title in Budapest in 2023 and earned silver in Paris last summer alongside Olympic gold in the 4x100m relay, previously missed the Tokyo 2021 Olympics after a positive marijuana test at the U.S. trials.
This incident marks one of the most turbulent moments of her career, with Richardson pledging to confront the situation “head-on.”
