The 2015 world cross-country champion and two-time world medallist had broken the women-only world record for 10km last month

World Athletics President Sebastian Coe and Jamaican sprint sensation Shelly-Ann Fraser Pryce have sent their messages of condolences to the family and friends of Women-only 10km record holder and former World Cross Country champion Agnes Tirop.

On Wednesday 13 October, shocking news hit the world as the athlete who was due to celebrate her 25th birthday in a matter of days was found dead in her Iten home. The 10.000m athlete who also represented Kenya in the Tokyo Olympic Games held this year was found by neighbors who went to check on her after noisy altercations were heard in her home on Tuesday night.

In a message, Coe, who was in Kenya during the World under 20 athletics championships held at Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani in August, condoled with the country as he mourned the loss of the promising athlete who was the holder of the women only 10km record that she broke in September at the Road to Records race held in Germany.

"Athletics has lost one of its brightest young stars in the most tragic circumstances. World cross country champion at just 19, Agnes Jebet Tirop burst on to the global scene in 2015 and has been one of the world’s best female distance runners over the past six years. This is a terrible blow to the entire athletics community, but especially to her family, her friends and Athletics Kenya and I send them all our most heartfelt condolences,” Coe said in his message.

Double Olympic gold medalist Fraser Pryce had passed her condolence message in a post on her social media page.

“My Kenyan fans we mourn with you. Condolences to the family and friends of Agnes,” the Jamaican posted.
