Ferdinand Omanyala has crashed out of the Paris Olympic Games after finishing a disappointing eighth in the semifinals of the 100m at the Stade de France.

This is the second time Omanyala has failed to reach the final of the Games after suffering a similar fate in Tokyo three years ago.

The Commonwealth Games champion had hoped to finish inside the top two or advance as one of the two second-fastest losers but was a fraction slow off the blocks.

The slow start would prove costly for the second-fastest sprinter in the season, as he couldn’t catch up and force his way to the final set for tonight at 10:50 pm, Kenyan time.

It was yet another hard watch for Kenyans who were yet to come to terms with Zablon Ekwam’s heartbreaking show in the 400m, where he failed to finish due to an injury.

There were hopes that Omanyala would give Kenyans to celebrate, but it wasn’t going to be with that start.

Kishane Thompson of Jamaica won the heat after clocking 9.80 seconds, with silver medalist Fred Kerly of the United States coming in second after timing a season’s best of 9.84.

Omanyala is not the sole giant who failed to advance to the final, as reigning 200m champion Andre De Grasse of Canada and Zharnel Hughes of Great Britain fell short in the heat.

Hughes, who was the first British man to qualify for the Olympic Games 100m final, in 21 years in Tokyo, hoped to reach the final and make up for the false start he had three years ago.

Meanwhile, defending champion Lamont Marcell Jacobs of Italy qualified by the barest of margins as one of the fastest losers.

America’s Kenny Bednarek also sailed through in a similar fashion having finished fourth in heat one, which was the fastest.
