OREGON22: Chebet turns focus to Budapest and Paris after World Championships silver in Oregon

The African champion gave the country her fourth silver medal on Sunday morning.

After claiming silver in the World Athletics 5000m championships, Beatrice Chebet is dreaming of upgrading to gold in 2023 edition set for Budapest, Hungary.

The African champion over the distance handed the country the fourth silver medal in the penultimate day of the championship on Sunday morning at the Hayward Field, Oregon.

She finished behind Tsegay Gudaf of Ethiopia who succeeded the outgoing champion Helen Obiri after clocking 14:46.29 in a final that had three Kenyans contesting for the podium places.

Chebet, the 2018 World junior title winner timed a season best of 14:46.75 to finish ahead of the lurking Dawit Seyaum of Ethiopia and the battling World 10000m bronze medalist Margaret Kipkemboi.

The 2019 Diamond League trophy winner says her focus is firmly focused on bringing home gold in Budapest as well as the 2024 Paris Olympics.

"Come next year, I will be going for gold as well as the Olympics. The field was strong and had trust in my kicking skills," she said shortly after the race.

Even though, Obiri who is set to fully transition to road races did not mount a title defence, Chebet highlighted the role played by the multiple World champion over the distance in inspiring her to deliver the silver.

She revealed that the Olympic silver medalist whom she termed as a mentor who advised and had encouraged her before the race.

"I thank Obiri for her mentorship and advice. I have raced with her in Diamond League races before and tapped some experience from her. Before I ran today she wished me luck. When she broke the news that she was leaving the track, she told me I would be a world champion at some point, " she added.
