The organizers of the Nandi Barngetuny Memorial Mountain Run have promised a bigger and better third edition of the annual run set to be held on January 7 2024 at its traditional venue in Tinderet, Nandi County.
Speaking during the inaugural Great Chepsaita Cross Country Run, the organizers led by the race's patron Julius Melly revealed that they were leaving no stone unturned in making the third edition a resounding success.
Melly who doubles up as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Tinderet constituency further pointed out that the race will attract international participants.
"We are expecting lots of guests from various countries in the world. The race will be one of a kind," Melli averred.
The race patron also called on athletes to turn up for the monetary incentive. Millions will be up for grabs.
"The total prize is Ksh5 million, distributed to various categories. We have also attracted many sponsors who have agreed to support us," he told Mozzart Sport.
Insisting on the impact of the race, the patron noted that the winners of the past edition have flown the country's flag high on various Mountain Running Championships worldwide.
For instance, Patrick Kipng'eno, the winner of the second edition went on to win gold for Kenya in the World Mountain and Trail Running Championships that were held in Innsbruck-Stubai, Austria in June.
"We are calling on all Kenyans and athletics lovers to turn up in large numbers," the Tinderet MP urged.
He further congratulated the man behind the Chepsaita Cross Country vision, Farouk Kibet, noting that it was timely to shield school-going children from ill societal habits like drug and substance abuse.
"Today (Saturday), we have seen a great job here, thanks to the race's patron Farouk for organizing an exciting event. It is happening when schools are closed and children will learn that they can monetize their talents," Melly praised.
Reigning World Mountain champion Kipng’eno won the second edition of the event that was held on January 7, 2023. Kipngeno cut the tape in a time of 56:21.51 and was followed by Josephat Kiprotich in 57:22.38 with Hillary Maiyo closing the first three podium finishes in 57:36.09.
