Head coach Stanley Towet has called for this weekend's team to be retained for Tokyo

Skipper Boniface Mweresa, who captained Team Kenya to the highly successful World Athletics relays in Guangzhou, China, has revealed his next career targets ahead of the Tokyo World Championship in September.

Mweresa was key for the team as they secured three tickets to the global competition, racing in the 4x400m men, 4x100m men, with 4x400m mixed relay that won bronze going through as well.

“It was an honour to captain this historic team,” Mweresa offered on his social media platforms. “The national records and a direct ticket to the world relays are an honour, and work well done.”

As they embark on preparations for the World Championships set for September, Mweresa reveals his next move in a short, but precise declaration: “Up next, individual personal bests (PBs).”

The 31-year-old carries a 44.96 PB in the one-lap race from the 2022 Commonwealth Games, a 20.76 in 200m from the 2023 Botswana Grand Prix, and 10.37 in 100m from the same year, achieved in the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) athletics championships.

He is also looking to qualify for the 400m, whose mark for Tokyo has been set at 44.85.

Meanwhile, head coach Stanley Towet, speaking to Athletics Kenya media, was proud of the performance by Kenya, a country not renowned for its sprint prowess.

“These athletes have worked hard, and I am grateful that three of our four teams have qualified for the World Championships in Tokyo. In addition, we’ve broken national records in all the events. This means our preparations in Nairobi were thorough,” Towet said.

He added that he had always been convinced of the team’s capability following their training in Nairobi.

“I could tell from the last weekend meeting at Ulinzi Sports Complex that this team will deliver, especially after posting some world-leading times. The athletes were diligent, embracing the training programme we drafted, and the results are there for all to see. I would like to see this team maintained for the World Championships in Tokyo since they have done a tremendous job,” the coach said.
