Mary Moraa ran her season's best to clinch the Rabat Diamond League 800M women's race in 1:58.72 on Sunday
Commonwealth Games 800m champion Mary Moraa put up a show to clock a season’s best of 1:58.72 to clinch first place in the Rabat Diamond League series held in Morocco on Sunday.
Moraa breezed past second-placed Australian Catriona Bisset (2:00.11) and American Sage Hurta-Klecker who also timed a season’s best of 2:00.62 in third.
According to Moraa, she was in perfect form ahead of the Rabat Diamond League, and she expected the results. The 22-year-old was coming from a well-deserved victory in the fourth edition of the Kip Keino Classic World Continental Tour where she timed 1:58.83 to win the women’s 800m at the Moi International Sports Centre Kasarani.
“It was my second outdoor race of the season after the first one at home in Nairobi. So, I am of course very pleased with my result. Time is great but to be honest it is the result I expected. I knew I had the shape to accomplish this kind of race in Rabat,” she said.
The World 800m bronze medalist also disclosed that she is working on staging a repeat of her performance at the 2022 World Championships in Oregon where she made it to the podium. Moraa claimed bronze in the women’s 800m after finishing third in a new personal best of 1:56.71. She is keen to stamp authority during the World Championships in Budapest, Hungary.
“In the end, I felt a lot of pain in my legs, which is why I needed some time to recover. But I have no injury, all is good. After running in Paris on June 9th, I will travel back to Kenya for training,” she said.
“At the World Championships in Budapest, my goal is to get a medal. Being on a podium would be great, there are many girls but only three medals,” she concluded.
The win was Moraa’s third since April this year when clinched victory at the Botswana Grand Prix where she clocked 50.44 to win the women’s 400m. Her next mission will be to secure a win in the upcoming Paris Diamond League set for Friday 9 June.
