Double Olympic marathon champion Eliud Kipchoge has offered insights into the meaning behind his inspiring slogan, "No human is limited."
Kipchoge's dedication to pushing the boundaries of human potential has been evident throughout his career.
On 16 September, he won the 2018 Berlin Marathon in a time of 2:01:39, breaking the previous world record by 1 minute and 18 seconds (2:02:57), set by fellow countryman Dennis Kimetto at the same event back in 2014. It was the greatest improvement in a marathon world record time since 1967.
The Ineos 1:59 Challenge, held on 12 October 2019, was an attempt by the long-distance runner to break the two-hour mark for marathon running, which he achieved in a time of 1:59:40.2.
However, Kipchoge's vision extends beyond personal achievement. As he explained, the motto is not just about him, but inspiring everyone to believe in their capabilities.
The motto signifies the immense potential we all possess. It is a call to challenge one’s self-perceptions and relentlessly pursue their goals. It emphasises the importance of hard work, discipline, and an unwavering belief in oneself.
“That slogan cuts across. It does not mean that when I fail the slogan fails. Even journalists, you are not limited. Do not limit yourselves to being in Kenya and reporting in Kenya alone. You can go far, report across the world, show the sport, and let the whole community know what sports is. That is what I mean by ‘No human is limited,” he offered.
The motto resonates not only with athletes but with anyone striving to overcome obstacles and achieve their full potential.
“All of us can do their small assignment pretty well and without limitations. It cuts across everywhere, even you as a person, stretch yourself to be unlimited. As athletes, we are stretching ourselves and we know we will get somewhere,” Kipchoge continued.
Meanwhile, all eyes will be on the marathon legend as he seeks to add another feather to his already decorated hat. Kipchoge will be hoping to claim his third Olympic title in the upcoming summer games after securing wins at the 2016 Rio Olympics and the delayed 2021 Tokyo Olympic Games.
Adding to his quest for glory are the newly unveiled Nike shoes. The company recently unveiled their latest Alphafly series, the Alphafly 3 ‘Blueprint’ and Kipchoge will be one of the athletes to try out the shoe.
The innovative marathon running shoes will play a pivotal role in his success at the Olympics, owing to their unique features. The shoes are labeled the “fastest shoes in the world” and will be instrumental in propelling the legendary marathoner in his quest for victory.
The Alphafly 3 has Atomknit Uppers to provide breathability and a snug fit. They also feature Air Zoom Units to enhance responsiveness for dynamic running. The shoe also boasts a ZoomX Foam Midsole to offer a balance of firmness and cushioning, among other unique features.
The shoe is 15% lighter than the previous model with heel-to-toe transitions, designed and tested at Nike’s Sport Research Lab to improve speed and reduce weight, making these shoes a top choice for marathon runners.
The blueprint edition dropped on July 3 and retails for about Ksh36,000.
