Lucy Mawia Muli has been banned for 3 years after a positive test at the Italian Cross Country Championships in March.
The Italian anti-doping agency had provisionally suspended the Kenyan cross-country, in April.
Her period of ineligibility runs from 10 March 2024 to 27 March 2027 for use of methoxy polyethylene glycol-epoetin beta (CERA), according to AIU.
The 26-year-old holds a half-marathon best of 1:09:38 and 5000m and 10,000m bests of 15:33.93 and 32:33.37, respectively, both from 2022.
In their statement when she was first provisionally suspended, the Italian anti-doping agency wrote; "The National Anti-Doping Tribunal, accepting the instance proposed by the National Anti-Doping Prosecutor’s Office, has provisionally suspended the athlete Lucy Mawia Muli (FIDAL member) for the violation of articles 2.1 e 2.2 (substance detected: EFEDRINA, OXYCODONE AND ITS METABOLITE OXYMORPHONE). The test was carried out by NADO Italia.”
Efedrina also known as ephedrine is known as a stimulant and weight-loss drug. Oxycodone is a narcotic drug used to mask severe pain.
The combination of ephedrine and oxycodone is uncommon among distance runners.
