Ugandan distance running star Jacob Kiplimo has spoken out after World Athletics officially declined to ratify his stunning performance at the 2025 Barcelona Half Marathon as a new world record.

The global body declined to ratify the time of 56:42, which was 48 seconds off the previous mark set by Yomif Kejelcha, making the multiple world cross country champion the first athlete in history to break the 57-minute barrier over the distance, citing a breach of competition rules.
When asked about the ruling, Kiplimo remained measured. "I would rather not say anything until I read the full report," he says. "But do not forget, the time may not be an official world record yet but it is still at the top of the list."
The race organisers in Barcelona have contested the decision, noting that "no rule specifies the distance a lead car must maintain from the frontrunner."
The world governing body maintains the run failed to comply with World Athletics Technical Rule 6.3.1, which prohibits athletes from receiving pacing assistance from anyone not competing in the same race, or from any technical device other than a wearable.
Broadcast footage from the race showed Kiplimo running much of the course approximately 10 to 15 meters behind the lead pace car.
They added, "The official report from the World Athletics referee states that the vehicle did not benefit the athlete. We will study all the documentation and, if deemed appropriate, take the necessary steps to prove the validity of the mark."
With the issue unresolved, Kiplimo is shifting his focus to his next challenge. "On 26 April, I will compete in the London Marathon," confirmed the three-time World Cross Country champion, who finished second in London last year.
