Former world marathon record holder Eliud Kipchoge has revealed three simple and crucial secrets to attaining self-discipline, and in turn, performing incredibly well on the global stage.
According to Kipchoge, competing efficiently requires a holistic approach to athlete development. He underscored the importance of what he termed as 'Vitamin N', setting priorities right, and avoiding complaining.
1. What is Vitamin N?
Vitamin N, according to Kipchoge, is the ability to say NO in certain circumstances. Kipchoge pointed out that maintaining focus and prioritizing one's goals required an efficient use of time and energy. He advocated for a disciplined approach to training and competition, which sometimes entailed declining invitations or opportunities that could potentially distract an athlete from the ultimate objective.
By making strategic decisions about commitments and avoiding unnecessary distractions, an athlete can safeguard their physical and mental well-being, ensuring they remain on the path to success in the competitive world of sports.
"Rule number one is to get Vitamin N. N is to learn to say no. You need to inject yourself with vitamin N. N is to learn to say no. That is a vitamin. That is how to get self-discipline," he offered.
2. Setting priorities right
Secondly, Kipchoge underscored the significance of setting priorities right for athletes aspiring to achieve excellence.
He contended that success is linked to a clear understanding of one's goals and a deliberate alignment of priorities. He highlighted the necessity for athletes to create a hierarchy in their goals, making sure that preparation, recuperation, and self-care come first.
"Secondly setting your priorities right," he averred.
3. Avoiding complaining
Finally, the marathoner believes that the journey to greatness is challenging, and complaining only diverts energy from constructive efforts. He advocates for embracing challenges as opportunities for growth and learning, asserting that a positive mindset is essential for overcoming obstacles.
"Thirdly is to avoid complaining," he revealed.
The former world marathon record holder is also gearing up for the 2024 Tokyo Marathon scheduled for Sunday, March 3.
It will be a return for Kipchoge, who set the Tokyo record of 2 hours, 2 minutes, and 40 seconds back in 2022.
The G.O.A.T of distance running will be looking to re-assert his dominance in the marathon. He became the only man to run 1:59:40 during the sub-2 project that was set up in Vienna.
The NN Running team member currently owns the second-fastest marathon time on record with his 2:01:09 from 2022 in Berlin.
Kipchoge won the last two Olympic marathons in 2016 and 2021. He has 18 total wins on his record. He will be using the marathon as a springboard ahead of the 2024 Paris Olympics.
