Abraham Kibiwott readies up for 'busiest year' in his career

The World 3,000m steeplechase bronze medalist will kick off his medal hunt in the Kenya Police Service Cross Country Championships slated for January 19 at the Ngong Racecourse

2016 Africa Athletics Championships 3,000m steeplechase bronze medallist Abraham Kibiwott looks forward to an action-packed year as he hopes to fly the country's flag high in various events.

He will compete in various activities leading to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games in August which is his highlight of the year.

The Olympics are slated for Friday 26 July to Sunday, 11 August.

“This could be one of the busiest years in my career. I have lined up various events that will culminate at the Olympic Games,” he offered.

The World 3,000m steeplechase bronze medalist will kick off his medal hunt with the Kenya Police Service Cross Country Championships slated for January 19 at the Ngong Racecourse.

Kibiwott, who trains under the close watch of inexhaustible rugby coach Japhter Keter, will then skip the World Cross Country Championships in Belgrade, Serbia.

He will compete in the Sirikwa Classic Cross Country Tour - Gold penciled for February 3 at the Lobo Village in Eldoret.

The event will be crucial in his build-up for the Africa Games slated for March 8-23 in Accra, Ghana.

The trials for the African Games will be held at the Nyayo Stadium from February 16-17. Kibiwott skipped the 2019 Africa Games in Rabat after picking an injury in Morocco. He will be looking to bounce back in style.

“After skipping the 2019 Africa Games in Rabat, I want to try my best and make the team for the Accra Games this time round," he noted.

Following the Africa Games, the Reigning Commonwealth 3,000m steeplechase champion will line up for the Kip Keino Classic scheduled for April 20 at the Nyayo National Stadium.

He noted that he would be targeting gold in the event.

He will be looking to build on his last year's performance where he finished second (8:09.71) behind Amos Kirui who won in 8:08.45 with Leonard Bett third in 8:10.2.

“I missed last year’s title but want to try my best and win it. This will be a great achievement for me,” he said.

His packed year will continue with the Diamond Leagues where he will be seeking domination before shifting focus to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

“I always compete in Doha and it has become my best event. The Doha Meet will be a precursor for the Rabat then national trials for the Olympics. I want to ensure I dominate the season considering I am currently enjoying top form,” he concluded.
