The two faced formidable opposition in the wins with Jepchirchir completing a rare double.
In a dramatic finish to the women’s race at the New York City Marathon on Sunday 7 November, Peres Jepchirchir pulled away in the final meters to win gold in the women's race, clocking 2:22:39.
Her victory comes just three months after winning gold on her debut at the Olympic Games, running against a formidable field under hot conditions in Sapporo for the title.
Jepchirchir's time of 2:22:39 was just four seconds ahead of Viola Cheptoo who was making her debut in the distance with her brother Bernard Lagat on the broadcast booth doing commentary for the race.
One of these three women won the New York City marathon.

Ababel Yeshaneh of Ethiopia finished third while Olympics bronze medalist, American Molly Seidel finished fourth.
In surviving the three-way battle for gold in a sprint finish, Jepkoech goes down in history as the first athlete to win and Olympic gold and race for the top prize in the famed New York City Marathon the same year.
In field that had the second fastest marathoner in history Kenenisa Bekele and the Olympics silver medalist Abdi Nageeye, it was Kenya's Albert Korir who stood the test of the five boroughs to win gold in the men's race.
Korir, who finished second in 2019, had established a 17-second lead through the 35-kilometre mark as he went on to clock 2:08.22 for victory ahead of Moroccan Mohamed El Aaraby who came home 44 seconds later with Italian Eyob Faniel third.
