Amos Kipruto won the Haspa Marathon Hamburg on Sunday, 27 April, with a superb 2:03:46 course record, clocking the first sub-2:04:00 time in the history of the race.
Philemon Kiplimo ran 2:04:01 and was also inside the former record of 2:04:09 set by Kenya’s Bernard Koech in 2023.

Meanwhile, Workenesh Edesa of Ethiopia won the women’s race with a world-class time of 2:17:55, which is the second fastest time in the history of the race.
Kenya’s former world record holder, Brigid Kosgei, a late entrant to the race, was second in 2:18:26, and Sichala Kumeshi followed in third place with 2:19:53.
For the first time, three women broke the 2:20:00 barrier in Hamburg.
The 32-year-old winner, who carried a personal best (PB) of 2:03:13 to the race, going on to run inside 2:04:00 for the third time in his career, and his friend with whom he shared a room ahead of the race, Kiplimo, were joined by fellow Kenyans Sang and Felix Kibitok in the lead, breaking away shortly after the 30km mark (1:28:09).
Kibitok soon dropped back, and Sang lost contact soon after 35km.
“The plan was for Kiplimpo and I to support each other, and that worked well,” Kipruto, who pulled away in the final kilometres for victory, said.
“The Hamburg Marathon is a fantastic race, and the support of the spectators was a great motivation for me. I will be back next year.”
Meanwhile, five women were in the lead early on, running a course record pace for a long time. Ethiopia’s Yalemzerf Yehualaw is the record holder with 2:17:23 from 2022.
Three runners passed the half-marathon mark together in 68:39. Kosgei, Kumeshi, and Edesa formed the leading group. Kumeshi then dropped back before the 25km mark.
Edesa made her move just before the 35km mark. The Ethiopian had entered the race with a personal best of 2:18:51.
“I am very happy. I deliberately didn't run too fast in the first part to save some energy. I then could pick up the pace late in the race. From 30k onwards, I knew I was going to win,” said the 32-year-old Edesa after improving her personal best by almost a minute to 2:17:55.
