While the season forced Athing Mu to step back from the spotlight, it illuminated the importance of relying on Christ for guidance and strength

Former Olympic 800m champion Athing Mu endured the most challenging season of her career in 2024, facing adversities that reshaped her perspective on life and faith.

At 22, Mu, who had risen to global stardom with her effortless dominance on the track, found herself navigating injuries, disappointment, and a journey of spiritual growth that profoundly impacted her outlook.

The turning point of Mu’s season came just weeks before the U.S. Olympic Trials when a hamstring injury cast doubt on her ability to defend her Olympic title in Paris.

Despite battling through to compete, her dream ended in heartbreak during the 800m final when a devastating fall left her at the back of the pack, missing out on a spot in the Olympics.

Fighting tears, she crossed the finish line last, a stark contrast to the glory she had become synonymous with.

Reflecting on the turbulent year during a podcast with Jinger and Jeremy Vuolo, Mu opened up on how her faith carried her through.

“This past year was not just about running track and field. It was about me growing in Christ and trusting Him like never before.

I’ve never been at a point where I had to rely solely on Him. I realized I could not do it on my own,” she shared.

Mu’s fall at the trials was a crushing moment, not just for her fans but for the athlete herself. It marked a dramatic departure from her meteoric rise to fame.

“I think the main thing it was about was just me and growing in Christ even more and truly trusting Him because I've never been at a point in my career where I was like solely just relying on Christ and being like hey like I need your help to get me to the next point,” she continued.

At 19, Mu won Olympic gold in Tokyo, setting a national record and cementing her place as a global sensation.

In 2022, she became the youngest athlete to hold both World and Olympic titles in an individual track event.

Even in 2023, amid mental struggles, she claimed bronze at the World Championships and broke the American record to win the Diamond League Final.

But 2024 brought challenges unlike any before. Competing just once more before ending her season, Mu chose to focus on recovery; both physical and emotional.

Her vulnerability during this period showcased a side of her rarely seen: an athlete learning to reconcile the demands of greatness with the limitations of humanity.

Through it all, Mu found solace in her faith. While the season forced her to step back from the spotlight, it illuminated the importance of relying on Christ for guidance and strength.

“This year reminded me that my success doesn’t define me. Faith is what keeps me moving forward,” she concluded.
